Dancing the Curious Courage of Risk

How can environmental issues and the climate crisis be investigated by dance and theatre? Based on this question, Tiago Gambogi offers a thought-provoking talk about the last 10 years of his career, exploring a range of works (stage, site specific performances, artivist actions, photo/video performances) and creative disciplines (dance, theatre, clowning , pole dance, photography, video), unveiling, in a playful way, the concepts and strategies used in his artivist practice. The lecture investigates the following works and their collaborating partners:
Untitled Amazon; Gatherers Project; Trans-Amazônia Project;
Bela Morte performance; BentO – a siren for responsibility;
Alma Lama (Mud Soul); Bittersweet River; Vale Kills / Mayfair Hotel performance; Fauno ; Bruma-D-inho; Nosso Luto Nossa Luta (Our Grief Our Fight); Amazon’s Ashes; XR Thanet performances; 7th October 2019 Extinction Rebellion performance/arrest; Pé de Busca: Lily of the Desert; Litoral Limerence; Afanc

Tiago Gambogi is a “Brasilian Extraordinaire” - a dancer, actor, clown, pole dancer, artivist and lecturer. For the past 25 years, he has co-directed f.a.b. - The Detonators and worked with artists including Nigel Charnock, Earthfall, Ben Duke, Angela de Castro, Grupo Oficcina Multimédia and The Institute for Crazy Dancing. Gambogi's daring approach has led him to appear as his clown on the BBC’s Jonathan Ross show, pull a 5-metre wooden canoe inside an office building in the Amazon and appear on the front cover of all national newspapers for his arrest regarding environmental issues. Project Trans-Amazônia saw him teach, perform and travel the Transamazon Highway, crossing 30 localities (cities, villages, indigenous settlements) across seven Brazilian states. His transdisciplinary holistic work encompasses improvisational contemporary dance, clowning, performance art and site-specific art approaches, creating a powerful new artistic hybrid form dealing with the performative and non-performative in pursuit of new creative responses and a dialogue with companies involved in socio-environmental crises.
